Advanced Summer Online Intensive

Classes start June 22, 2020


Join Village Theatre’s Advanced Summer Online Intensive. Get a leg up with Triple threat skill focused training and develop new skills in the Creative Labs. Make professional connections with some of the region’s best professional performers, directors, choreographers, designers, writers, and teaching artists.
Who is teaching what?

The Summer Intensive is designed for experienced students and performers with advanced skills. Students will apply for the program and will need to have experience performing in shows and/or participating in Village Theatre’s school-year Institute.

Most classes meet once a week for four weeks, two hours each. Choose three or more classes and receive a 35% discount, which means you’ll pay under $100 per class.

  2. If you select and are approved for three or more courses, you will be placed on a special discount list to receive the 35% discount.
  3. We will review your application and then send you a coupon code and link to register on our online registration system. This will then confirm your spot in the classes.

Come and explore the answers to these questions and more in this challenging, insightful, and interactive online class. ACTING: Advanced Character Work with Village Theatre Artistic Director, Jerry Dixon

Up your game in this advanced class with Broadway actor, singer, director, choreographer, lyrist, composer and Village Theatre’s Artistic Director Mr. Jerry Dixon. Dive into the inner workings of a character, investigate the nuances of a scene, and get instruction and feedback from a highly-esteemed and seasoned professional in the theatre industry.
Prerequisite: Professional performance credit or by permission

DANCE: Intermediate Musical Theatre Jazz & Ballet

In this higher-level class for more experienced singers, you will learn more about singing and storytelling through music, specifically focusing on and celebrating contemporary musical theatre. You’ll grow in vocal technique, music theory, breath control, rhythm, melody, sight-reading, and acting through song. Expand your vocal range, fine tune your musical ear, strengthen breathing, learn new music, and so much more as you sharpen your skills as a soloist and performer in the style of modern musical theatre.

From cold readings to finding the right monologue to how to command the room, come, and improve and perfect your auditioning skills. Gain confidence as you build and expand your knowledge of the audition process, overcome fears and misconceptions and discover what it takes to become a master of the audition room.

DANCE: Hip Hop
Wednesdays 7/22-8/12, 10:00AM-12:00PM

Be prepared to move more than just your body! We will be researching the foundations of Hip Hop, it's effect on America's culture, and its importance to Black Americans and America as a whole. We will also explore the funk styles that deviated from Hip Hop like popping, boogaloo, and animation. This class will be highly energetic and will challenge your thinking and creativity to help your movement become your own.

DANCE: Choreography
Wednesdays 7/22-8/12, 12:30-2:30PM

This class is for the intermediate/advanced dancer to explore storytelling through movement and how dance can be used as a powerful musical theatre tool. Students will start the session reviewing technique that they will then incorporate into their own solo choreography projects. Each week will build upon the skills learned and explored the week prior, culminating in a final choreography project. Students may be asked to dedicate time outside of class on creating weekly choreography assignments; in-class time will be used for exploring and expanding choreography, sharing out, and receiving feedback.
Prerequisite: Dance 2, 3, or 4 skill level

What is the difference between acting in front of a theatre full of people and acting in front of a camera? In this unique and inspiring class, you’ll learn the subtleties, methods, and techniques designed for acting for the camera. Whether it’s television or film, you’ll learn how less is more and develop the skills to create a character, and tell a story from the word, “ACTION”!
Taught by KIDSTAGE alum, Caitlin Kinnunen, who has also been Tony nominated for her lead role in The Prom.

Songwriting with Village Theatre Associate Artistic Director, Brandon Ivie and Resident Music Director, Tim Symons

Come and explore how great songs are created, in this collaborative, inspiring and interactive class. Learn the important elements and skills needed for writing and composing as you research, examine, and put into practice what it takes to create magical and memorable songs for a musical theatre production like Dear Evan Hansen, Hadestown, Hamilton and more. There are no great musicals, without great songs. Be the songwriter that makes the magic happen! One song may be selected for a public virtual performance.
Prerequisite: Short writing application and/or approval may be required.

Theatre Design (Costumes & Make-up)

From concept to execution, how does a designer engineer their craft? How does the magic begin? Bring your interest or passion for costumes and make up and learn about the design process from Village Theatre’s own professional designers. Work alongside these inspiring professionals as they share, teach, answer questions and guide you to create your own vision and design!

SESSION 2

Newsies Bootcamp
Tuesdays 7/21-8/11, 10:00AM-12:00PM

Join cast members from Village Theatre's production of Newsies to explore the new landscape of musical theatre dance. Combining elements from both the ballet and hip hop worlds, you will be challenged to add Afrocentric textures to Eurocentric dance styles (and vice-versa!) in an environment modeled after the professional rehearsal room. Learn to imbue changing choreography with honest movement and intention, while growing your dance technique and unique artistry.

Prerequisite: This class combines intermediate to advanced level choreography in multiple styles. You will explore movement that is unfamiliar regardless of which styles you train in or have explored. You will need a level of physical coordination that allows you to be brave with your art, and an openness to learn new ways to move your body. If you are ready to be challenged as a dancer and storyteller, you are ready for this class.
